STLC Chamber Intern for Tourism Development

Internship Opportunity: Tourism Development & Execution
 
Organization Description
 
The St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce is the designated Tourism Promotion Agent for St. Lawrence County. In this role, our dedicated tourism team works closely with I Love New York and the New York State Matching Funds Program. The team also engages in active partnership with the Adirondack Regional Tourism Council and the Thousand Islands International Tourism Council to showcase St. Lawrence County to visitors in New York State and surrounding US states, as well as throughout bordering areas of Canada.
 
Through a variety of strategic marketing efforts, such as print and digital marketing campaigns, event hosting, organizing, and partnerships, national trade show attendance, and state and regional tourism conference attendance, we promote the County’s many natural resources, museums and attractions, sporting and recreational opportunities, and the many other aspects that contribute to the county’s unique quality of life.
 
Job Description
 
The Tourism Development & Execution Internship will collaborate with the Director of Tourism and the Tourism & Events Manager, as well as other members of the Chamber team including the Executive Director and the Communications Specialist on a range of tourism-related actions.
 
Interns should expect to spend working hours in the office (open Monday - Friday from 9am - 4:30pm) but may also have the opportunity to participate in activities outside of regular hours and at locations around the county (TBD as needed). Schedule and hours worked per week are flexible to the needs of the intern, with a minimum of 7 hours per week and a maximum of 35.
 
Scope of Work
 
The Tourism Development & Execution Intern will engage in a variety of tasks based upon the interests and skills of the intern and the needs of the Tourism team.
 
A focus will be on:
 

  • Developing the online event calendar on VisitSTLC.com by managing, editing, and approving user-submitted event listings and researching area events to add event listings with key details to the website Event Calendar, and
  • Working with the Tourism Team to complete daily tasks related to special event planning and execution, digital and print marketing content creation for marketing purposes, digital and print content management for VisitSTLC.com, local upcoming event promotion, and other general tourism marketing efforts.
 
Additional activities may include any of the following:
 
  • Creating original photo and video content to be used for social media posts, Facebook stories, Instagram reels, and Pinterest (this may be related to event coverage/attendance or seasonal content).
  • Creating designs on Canva relevant to tourism initiatives.
  • Creating new blog content for VisitSTLC.com by writing new blog posts and updating existing blog posts related to special event promotions for the 2024 season, including Live Music, July 4th Celebrations, Summer Festivals, Farmer’s Markets, Fall Activities, Annual Recreational Events & more using WordPress for VisitSTLC.com.
  • Learning to edit and manage search engine optimization meta data for new/existing web pages and blog posts on VisitSTLC.com.
  • Reviewing VisitSTLC.com and update tourism content for restaurants, lodging, and attractions to meet I Love NY requirements.
  • Attending area events with the Tourism and Chamber teams to assist as needed.
  • Participating in the planning and execution of special projects as needed, especially for the 2024 Bassmaster Elite Series event (August, Waddington).
  • Engaging with local/member businesses for specific event promotion purposes, including the distribution of promotional flyers and collateral, outreach to relevant business members as needed, and participation at select networking events.
  • Tracking and collating collateral for brochure mailing requests received from VisitSLTC.com, trade shows, and over the phone requests.
  • Other duties as needed to assist tourism initiatives.
 
Applicant Criteria
 
The following criteria are critical to the success of the internship experience:
 
  • Self-transportation to and from the office at 101 Main Street in Canton, NY.
  • Personal car/transportation is not required, but it is ideal for event attendance.
  • Access to a personal laptop is required.
  • Must have fluent English speaking and writing skills.
 
Candidate Qualifications
 
The ideal Tourism Development & Execution Assistant should have the following qualifications:
 
  • Interests in events and activities in St. Lawrence County, marketing, and communications.
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency with computing applications (Microsoft Suite, Google Workspace).
  • Ability to multitask on a variety of projects.
  • Ability to use a variety of social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest.
  • Experience or awareness of Canadian communities is a plus!
