Fruit School * Establishing and Maintaining Your Plantings Edition This first in a series focused on backyard, homestead and small commercial fruit plantings with David Rice of Sweetcore Farm. Wednesday, November 16 6 - 8 pm This workshop is geared towards those who want to establish and maintain backyard fruit plantings. Those wishing to create small commercial or homestead orchards and small fruit plantings are also encouraged to attend. Apples, blueberries, and raspberries will be the major fruits examined. Site selection, soil preparation, varieties and rootstocks for the North Country. Planting, fertilization, and pest concerns with an eye towards organic solutions. Production supplies and sources will be discussed along with nursery and ordering recommendations. Group ordering is a potential benefit of participation in this "Fruit School" series of workshops, of which this is the first, designed to cover all of the bases of fruiting trees, bushes and even nuts. Dave Rice holds an Associate degree in horticulture with focus on fruit science. He has devoted the past thirty years to fruit and vegetable production, currently as the owner of Sweetcore Farm near Russell, NY with his wife Kathy. For the past four years he has presented the very popular Local Living Venture Fruit Tree Pruning workshop. This event is PART ONE of a Back Yard Fruit School series: 1) Establishing and Maintaining Your Plantings - current edition 2) Hands On Fruit Tree Pruning - mid March 2017 3) Establishing and Maintaining Your Seedlings - Mid April 2017 4) Open House with Blossoms & Trouble Shooting Common Concerns - August 2017 LOCATION UU Church, side entrance, 3-1/2 Main St., downtown Canton, NY 13676. DONATION For this unique learning experience, a $25 general public, $45 couple/family of two, $12 student donation is requested for material costs, to cover overhead expenses and to benefit Local Living Venture non-profit workshop creation. Please note that our Presenters are generous volunteers donating some portion of their time to support the Local Living Venture, because your donation is a major means of our support as a small community organization.
