Description
The Potsdam Food Co-op's Cheese of the Month for May will be offered during their 2nd Thursday Sampling on May 9th. From 3:30 - 5:30 pm you will have the opportunity to sample Halloumi - the grilling cheese of Cyprus. Considered to be 'The World's Most Fascinating Cheese', Halloumi is the traditional white cheese of Cyprus and has been produced on that island for centuries. Although produced today in modern facilities, it is done so with great respect to tradition. Halloumi is a rindless cheese prepared from a mixture of sheep, goat, and sometimes cow's milk, rolled in mint and soaked in brine, which keeps it fresh and flavorful for long periods of time - even in hot climates. This fascinating cheese is ideal for grilling, frying, and barbecuing because its higher-than-normal melting point allows it to retain its shape and texture. Pair Halloumi with Sauvignon Blanc or dry rosé, light red, or sparkling wines. Taste traditional Halloumi fresh, add it to cooked dishes, or include it in salads. Use it to accompany cold fruit, especially watermelon, serve it with a slice of smoked pork, or stir fry it and add it to pasta with cherry tomatoes and greens. Halloumi is especially suitable for omelettes and is ideal for inclusion in grilled vegetable kabobs. The Potsdam Food Co-op & Carriage House Bakery is located at 24 Elm Street and open daily from 8am to 7pm. It is a member-owned cooperative grocery store (although membership is not required) where everyone is welcome to shop and anyone is welcome to join. Committed to the community and local sustainability, its emphasis is on providing natural and organic foods with the practice of buying from local and regional growers and producers. Signature artisan breads, scones, and treats available on the Co-op shelves daily, are made in its Carriage House Bakery and baked in its wood-fired oven. Salads, sandwiches, wraps, and soups from the Co-op’s natural foods Deli are found in the grab & go section of the store. A large selection of specialty items such as gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian, and vegan foods are also available.
