About the Remington Museum of Art

The Remington Museum of Art is entering an exciting period of institutional growth and transformation. Home to the world’s largest public collection of artwork and ephemera from Frederic Remington and an important collection of sculpture by Sally James Farnham, the Museum is building on more than a century of history while strengthening its role as a regional cultural anchor and nationally significant American art institution.

As the Museum plans for its future, expanding contributed revenue and building a sustainable development program are among our highest institutional priorities. We are seeking an experienced, highly organized, and motivated Director of Development to help build that program and significantly expand philanthropic support for the Museum.

Position Summary

The Director of Development is the Museum’s senior fundraising professional and the Executive Director’s primary partner in developing and executing a comprehensive fundraising strategy.

This is a strategic and hands-on role with responsibility across individual and major giving, corporate and foundation support, annual giving, membership, grants, donor stewardship, and campaign planning. The Director will operate as a senior individual contributor, personally developing donor and funder relationships and executing fundraising strategy while working closely with the Executive Director, Board of Trustees, Remington Foundation, and Museum staff.

The Museum is specifically seeking a builder: someone who can bring organization, discipline, and consistent follow-through to a growing development program. The successful candidate will strengthen the systems underlying the Museum’s fundraising while actively cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding supporters.

The Director will not be starting from a blank slate. The Museum has established donors, members, corporate and foundation relationships, grant support, and significant opportunities for growth. The Director will be expected to organize and build upon this foundation to create a more deliberate, relationship-centered, and sustainable development program.

Scope of Responsibility

  • Individual & Major Giving
  • Corporate Sponsorships & Partnerships
  • Annual Giving
  • Membership Giving
  • Foundation & Government Grants
  • Donor Relations & Stewardship
  • Development Systems & Donor Data
  • Capital & Special Campaign Support
  • Remington Foundation Development Strategy

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute an annual development plan with clear fundraising goals, priorities, timelines, and measures of success.
  • Manage and grow a portfolio of individual, corporate, and foundation donors and prospects, including direct cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, and consistent follow-up.
  • Build the Museum’s major gifts program in partnership with the Executive Director, including prospect identification and research, qualification, moves management, cultivation strategies, donor meetings, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Own the Museum’s corporate sponsorship strategy, including identifying prospects, developing sponsorship opportunities, conducting direct outreach and solicitation, managing relationships, and ensuring appropriate stewardship and recognition.
  • Lead annual giving and membership fundraising strategies, including donor acquisition, renewal, retention, upgrading, reactivation, segmentation, and year-end giving.
  • Direct the Museum’s grant strategy and pipeline across private foundation and government sources, including prospect identification, grant calendars, proposal development and coordination, reporting, and stewardship. Grant writing experience is strongly preferred.
  • Establish and maintain effective donor relations and stewardship practices across all areas of giving, ensuring timely acknowledgment, meaningful communication, and consistent follow-through.
  • Assume ownership of the Museum’s fundraising systems and donor data. Evaluate the current donor management system, strengthen data integrity and reporting, and recommend and oversee a transition to a new CRM platform if appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain a qualified donor and prospect pipeline that clearly identifies relationship status, giving potential, next actions, responsibility, and timelines.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director and Board of Trustees to identify prospects, prepare leadership for donor conversations, coordinate introductions and solicitations, and strengthen a shared culture of philanthropy.
  • Work directly with the Remington Foundation Board to coordinate development strategy, identify and cultivate prospective supporters, strengthen donor relationships, and advance the Foundation’s role in supporting the Museum’s long-term financial sustainability.
  • Support planning and readiness for capital, special, and other significant fundraising campaigns, including cases for support, prospect development, campaign strategy, and donor cultivation.
  • Monitor fundraising performance and provide regular, useful reporting to the Executive Director and appropriate Museum and Foundation leadership.
  • We’re a small shop with a collaborative team, so we would be remiss without: Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will bring:

  • A minimum of five years of progressive nonprofit fundraising or advancement experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and demonstrated success.

  • Strong understanding of donor CRM/database systems, prospect management, donor segmentation, and fundraising reporting.
  • Excellent organizational and project-management skills, with demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and follow through without extensive supervision.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including donor-facing communications and persuasive fundraising writing.
  • Experience with grant strategy, grant writing, and/or grant management strongly preferred.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with the Executive Director, trustees, Foundation leadership, staff, donors, and community partners.
  • Sound judgment, professionalism, discretion, and respect for donor confidentiality.
  • Experience in museums, arts and culture, higher education, historic sites, or other mission-driven nonprofit organizations is valued but not required.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should submit the following to Executive Director Maggie McKenna at director@fredericremington.org:

  • A resume outlining relevant professional experience.
  • A cover letter describing your interest in the position and the experience you would bring to building and growing the Museum’s development program.
  • Three professional references who may be contacted as part of the hiring process. Please include each reference’s name, title, organization, relationship to you, phone number, and email address.

Finalists will also complete a brief, hypothetical development exercise designed to demonstrate fundraising strategy, organization, prioritization, donor communication, and follow-through. The exercise will be designed to take approximately 60–90 minutes and will not produce work for the Museum’s use.

The anticipated selection process will include application review, an initial interview, professional reference checks, a finalist development exercise and follow-up interview, and final selection.

The Remington Museum of Art is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to creating an inclusive workplace. We welcome applicants with diverse backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, and approaches to advancing the Museum’s mission.
