Chair Caning Workshop
Learn to cane contemporary chairs or replace caning in historic chairs in this informative & hands-on series with woodworker Chris Dufresne.

Details: Dates: Wednesdays, October 7 through October 28.
Time: 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Class Size: 10 people maximum. Participants should bring a chair with the old caning removed, or purchase a chair to practice on for an additional cost. A limited number of chairs will be available for purchase through SLCCHC.

Note: A chair that will take a caned seat has holes drilled around the seat opening.

About Chris: Woodworking for Chris Dufresne is a passion that began with upholstery when his father opened a shop after he retired. Chris was still in high school then and would help his father repair chair frames and assist with the upholstering process.

His interest in chairs grew as he got older. In 2007, Chris went to New Hampshire and studied with a Windsor chairmaker named Mike Dunbar, who called himself the “Dean of Windsor Chairmakers.”

It was a great experience and really opened his eyes to chair-making and repair, which led to chair caning.

Chair caning is as important to chair repair as turning a new spindle or chair leg on the lathe, and when done right, it makes for a comfortable chair that can last decades
