Description
19th Century St. Lawrence County in 3D
Join us for our next Brown Bag Presentation on April 30 at noon.
Tom French, author of "River Views: A History of the 1000 Islands in 3-D," will give a presentation of 19th-century 3D photographs of St. Lawrence County and the 1000 Islands at St. Lawrence County Historical Association as part of the monthly Brown Bag Lunch Series.
The presentation will include a brief history of stereography and many 3D images of St. Lawrence County and the 1000 Islands that are not in his book.
Part of the presentation will be interactive, as French will bring a number of stereoview reproductions and viewers, giving the audience an opportunity to view the images in 3D. He will also be available for questions and a book signing after the presentation.
"River Views: A History of the 1000 Islands in 3-D" was awarded a Silver Medal for Best Regional Book in the Northeast in the 2012 Independent Publishers Book Awards. The book comes with a special viewer that lets readers view 125-year-old photographs of the 1000 Islands in 3D.
The 3D photographs, known as stereoviews or stereocards, were originally taken between the 1860s & 1890s.
Highlights of the Presentation will include a 3D Photograph taken in the 1870s of Camp Gilmore along the Raquette River near Canton, a possible ferry on the Oswegatchie between Ogdensburg & Black Lake, and several stereoviews taken by A.C. McIntyre in Ogdensburg in the mid 1860s.
About A.C. McIntyre: A.C. McIntyre was a prominent early photographer of the 1000 Islands who got his start in Brockville and Ogdensburg before moving to Alexandria Bay.
His 3D stereoviews became ubiquitous to the 1000 Islands during the late nineteenth century, and his photos were, and in some circles continue to be, synonymous with the region. Walk into any museum or browse any book associated with the history of the Thousand Islands, and you will no doubt find multiple images taken by A.C. McIntyre.
During the course of his career, McIntyre published thousands of views, including the visits of two sitting US Presidents to the 1000 Islands — Ulysses Grant in 1872 and Chester Arthur ten years later. He traveled in a circle of nationally known photographers, including George Monroe (personal photography teacher of George Eastman of Eastman Kodak) and the famous Civil War photographer, Mathew Brady.
About the presenter: Tom French was raised on Wellesley Island, where he developed a love of local history. His father’s family is from Norwood, and he has lived in St. Lawrence County for over 40 years. He is a regular contributor to Adirondack Explorer.
