Description
The Potsdam Food Co-op's July Cheese of the Month sampling will be held during their Feature Friday, on July 8th. From 12- 2pm you will have the opportunity to sample Halloumi - the grilling cheese of Cyprus. Considered to be 'The World's Most Fascinating Cheese', Halloumi is the traditional cheese that has been produced on that island for centuries. Although produced today in modern facilities, it is done so with great respect to tradition. Halloumi is a rindless cheese prepared from a mixture of sheep, goat, and sometimes cow's milk, rolled in mint and soaked in brine, which keeps it fresh and flavorful for long periods of time - even in hot climates. This fascinating cheese is ideal for grilling, frying, and barbecuing because its higher-than-normal melting point allows it to retain its shape and texture. Delicious with Sauvignon Blanc or dry rosé, light red, or sparkling wines. Also pair Halloumi with Hefeweizen beer - two varieties now available at the Co-op: from Springdale Brewery in Massachusetts, and also from the Paulaner Brewery in Germany, considered to be the #1 wheat beer in Germany. Also available for sampling on July 8th is a vegan Halloumi from Violife’. Delicious and also ideal for grilling, frying, and barbecuing, this Halloumi is free from dairy, soy, gluten, lactose, and nuts. Suggestions: Taste Halloumi fresh, add it to cooked dishes, or include it in salads. Use it to accompany cold fruit, especially watermelon, serve it with a slice of smoked pork, or stir fry it and add it to pasta with cherry tomatoes and greens. Halloumi is especially suitable for omelets and is ideal for inclusion in grilled vegetable kabobs. Find Halloumi in items located in the Grab n’ Go section of the Co-op’s Deli case during the month along with recipes in the blog section of the Co-op’s website. Purchases of Halloumi will receive 10% off for the entire month of July. The Potsdam Food Co-op & Carriage House Bakery and Deli is located at 24 Elm Street and open daily from 8am to 7pm with curbside service available. It is a member-owned cooperative grocery store (although membership is not required) where everyone is welcome to shop and anyone is welcome to join.
