Massena- Did you know that baseball became a great American pastime during the Civil War? Learn about early baseball and other 19th century recreational pursuits at the 14th Annual Civil War Reenactment Weekend at Robert Moses State Park, Massena, Saturday and Sunday, July 25th -26th, sponsored by SeaComm Federal Credit Union. The Civil War Reenactment Weekend is the final event of the St. Lawrence County Historical Association?s Commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, which began in 1861. In addition to SeaComm Federal Credit Union, other sponsors include Gene and Connie Barto, Stewart?s Shops, Massena AMVETS Post #4, Heuvelton AMVETS Post #1997, Canton VFW Post #1231, Gouverneur VFW Post #6338, and Niles Asset Management, Inc. A food concession will be provided by the Marine Corps League, St. Lawrence County Detachment 408, throughout the weekend. The military camps are open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. Mock battles will be at 3 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. Visitors to the reenactment are encouraged to walk through the encampment to see how soldiers lived; check out the displays of Civil War history and artifacts at the pavilion; try your hand at a variety of Children?s toys and games from the 19th Century; and listen to short presentations on topics ranging from the Artillery at Gettysburg to Fan Language. New activities this year include a Civil War Trivia contest, a Ladies Fry Pan Toss, and games of rounders (Civil War era baseball). Also, Miss Susan?s Sutlery and Possum Holler Sutlery will be on hand to sell period goods, clothing, and souvenirs.
