Cheese sampling in Potsdam

The Potsdam Food Co-op's Cheese of the Month for April will be offered during their 2nd Thursday Sampling on April 11th. From 3:30 - 5:30 pm you will have the opportunity to sample Whiteface Cheddar with Cranberries, a specialty Cheese from Meier's Artisan Cheese, Fort Covington, NY. Meier's Whiteface Cheddar with Cranberries is an artisan cheese made by Dan Meier at his farm in Fort Covington. Dan learned the art of cheesemaking as a boy growing up in Switzerland. He moved to North America in 1989 and eventually settled in the North Country. All of his artisanal cheeses are handmade using the milk of his own herd of dairy cows that are raised with no growth hormones. Whiteface Cheddar with Cranberries is a medium cheddar, preservative-free, and aged about 3 months. Dan soaks dried cranberries in port wine and adds them to the cheese. This provides a visually appealing veining throughout. Suggestions: Whiteface Cheddar with Cranberries would be perfect on a cheese board with nuts and dried fruit or on its own, served at room temperature. It would be an elegant addition to your favorite sandwich, or serve it as a dessert cheese. Pair with champagne, Riesling, or Merlot wines. Beer lovers might prefer porter, ale, or lager. The Potsdam Food Co-op & Carriage House Bakery is located at 24 Elm St. and open daily from 8am to 7pm.
